A special shout out to Stephen and Richard for sharing their journey with us…
How long have you been practicing Bikram?
…it has been about 8 years.
WOW! It sounds like it’s a lifestyle for you. What got you into the practice?
Looking back on it, I guess you could say fate. While visiting my family in Naples, FL my partner, Richard Schneider, and I were introduced to Bikram Yoga. When looking for a yoga class like Astanga or Vinyasa, by chance we ended up in a hot room, a very hot room! From then on, I was hooked and eager to find out if there was a studio in Boston where I could continue the practice. Shortly after I canceled my membership at the yoga studio we belonged to, and the rest is history!
So after practicing for 8 years, what benefits have you received from your practice?
A looser, limber body. Bikram has helped me in many ways e.g., physically, mentally, & emotionally. For most of my adult life, I’ve dealt with back pain and muscle tension; and tried many treatments — some better than others — chiropractic, acupuncture, & massage for example. None helped as much as Bikram, the most therapeutic intervention!
Bikram Yoga has also reduced my stress & bouts of depression, and significantly lessened incidences of serious back spasms.
That’s so amazing! OK with 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises, tell us your favorite posture and why?
My favorite posture is Sasangasana/Rabbit Pose for two reasons: it is a positive counter to Ustrasana/Camel Pose. The first is a chest/heart opener that soothes the “soul”, and the second a forward bend that inwardly directs energy outward and to others. One of my favorite yoga teachers often would describe Sasangasana as preferred by introverts, and Ustrasana by extroverts. Sasangasana can be very healing for introverts like myself who have to put on a happy face all day, which can be exhausting.
Yes, rabbit pose has so many great benefits. It’s also a great posture to practice by the end of the day to induce a good nights sleep. Tell us a fun fact about you that most people don’t know.
My sister and I, while not biologically related, were both adopted — her as an infant and me at 2 1/2 – and raised by two loving parents. We both searched and found our birth mothers, and have/had relationships with them (mine, Diane, passed away in 2017); she often comes to mind when I’m lying in Savasana.
What a beautiful story! Thank you for that. So share with us how the practiced has helped you and Richard together as a couple.
I think it has brought us closer; having taken many classes together, it has aided in our understanding, not only of the benefits of the practice and how they affect us individually, but as a couple.
The personal benefits that we’ve reaped i.e., in my case an increase in happiness and reduction in my physical ailments have helped me to be a better person, and I hope to be a better and more supportive “spouse”.
We love to share your stories. It’s so important and does so much service to you as well as to others.
